State regulators could potentially be opening an investigation into Casco Bay Lines and its upcoming ferry rate increase.

The new rate, which goes into effect on June 20th, would bump up the price for a peak season (mid-April through mid-October) roundtrip ticket from $14 to $16.

The Maine Public Advocate is asking the Public Utilities Commission to open up a formal investigation into the price increases to keep them at a reasonable rate.

“It’s stressful to have to buy an individual ticket for $14 or $16 now. It’s made it stressful to come and go to your own home,” ferry rider and Peaks Island resident Molly Wendell-Parson told CBS 13.

Ferry service officials say operating costs continue to rise, and they are facing about a $3 million operating deficit.
