A fire in Westbrook that displaced two families was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

There were no injuries but one cat died in the fire overnight Tuesday morning at a multi-unit building on Locust Street.

Investigators say the fire was accidental and started in a trash can outside and was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

The home has been deemed uninhabitable.
