The Maine CDC reports that another person in Penobscot County has been diagnosed with HIV, bringing the total amount of cases in the area up to 40.

The Bangor Daily News reports that this the second case reported this month, with the initial cases in the outbreak being reported back in November of 2023. There are typically two new HIV cases per year in Penobscot County.

Almost all who have been infected reported being homeless or injecting drugs within the previous year. Additionally, all but two of the people infected in the outbreak tested positive for hepatitis C as well.

Community organizations across the state have increased prevention efforts and testing in response.

There is medication that can control HIV, but there is no known cure.
