The Maine Gun Safety Coalition is declaring victory in Tuesday’s election.
The group backed the election of Democrat Troy Jackson to the U.S. Senate while calling Susan Collins a “corporate gun lobby puppet.”
The Coalition also praised Governor-elect Hannah Pingree as a “a gun safety champion.” Outgoing Governor Janet Mills was a noteworthy opponent the state state’s Red Flag law, saying the already existing Yellow Flag Law as effective.
The Red Flag Law expanded the ability of family members to ask a judge to remove firearms from a person deemed unstable.
The group says 70 candidates it endorsed won election, and noted the defeat of opponents to the state’s Red Flag Law.
The coalition praised the election of Dana Staples over incumbent Augusta area state House member Quentin Chapman after Chapman sponsored a bill to repeal Question 2 (Red Flag Law).
Gun rights activists, including the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, have attempted to bring litigation challenging the constitutionality of the Red Flag Law.
