Police say a scam targeting Mainers in text messages demands compliance for violations and may include a state seal.
Clinton Police reported receiving one that appeared to be from the Cumberland County Traffic Division, saying it was a “Court-Ordered Mandatory Collections Notice.”
The message included a QR code with payment instructions and a list of violations.

Police are warning that the message is a scam and are advising the public not to respond and to notify them if they receive one.
They say the message includes an image of the state seal, a case number, and a judge’s name, along with “big bold scary words…designed to get your attention, and your panic level up.”
One giveaway on the message received by Clinton Police refers to “immediate suspension of Michigan driver’s license.”
