Police in Pittsfield are warning about a phone scam that’s initially highly deceptive, with an incoming call matching the ID and photograph of the victim’s spouse.

But the person on the other end turns out to be a highly agitated subject demanding money or their spouse will be seriously injured or killed.

Officers say, in this case, the person receiving the call was able to contact their spouse who was at work and safe.

Police say it’s important to report such a threat.

2. Contact your family member: Try to reach the allegedly kidnapped person directly using their own cell phone, text message, or social media. Avoid sharing information.

4. Ask verifying questions: Request to speak directly with the family member and ask specific questions only they would know.
